Installing Floating Shelves or Desktops the Right Way
When it comes to installing floating shelves or desktops, getting the bracket spacing and fixing method right isn’t just a technicality—it’s what ensures a long-lasting, safe, and professional finish. Whether you’re working on a residential renovation, a commercial fit-out, or custom joinery, here’s what you need to consider before installation.
Load limits depend on support
AMS floating shelves are designed with sustainability in mind, but their load capacity comes down to one thing: the quality of installation. Our shelves can hold significant weight when installed correctly—especially when fixed into structural supports like timber studs or masonry.
If you’re fixing to plasterboard, extra attention is needed. The use of hollow wall anchors or toggle fixings is possible for light applications, but we always recommend anchoring into studs or solid walls for strength and durability.
Recommended bracket spacing
AMS recommends placing concealed brackets no more than 600mm apart for standard floating shelf installations. This spacing provides optimal support without overloading individual brackets or the shelf board.
For desktops or shelving that will carry heavier loads—such as in commercial or retail environments—we suggest reducing the spacing or using additional brackets to ensure stability.
Wall type matters
The type of wall you’re mounting to will impact your fixing method:
• Masonry walls offer the strongest base—use appropriate masonry anchors.
• Timber studs behind plasterboard provide good support—aim to fix brackets directly into these.
• Plasterboard without studs is the weakest option—limit use to lightweight decorative shelving and use high-strength hollow wall fixings.
Professional tips for a clean install
• Always use a level to ensure straight alignment.
• Check that brackets are firmly fixed before sliding the shelf onto the pins.
• If installing across an uneven surface (like tile), pack behind brackets to maintain a flush finish.
